A Sanctuary Built on Back-Seat Rescues and a Goose Named Gerald

It started with one woman and her car, transporting injured birds around Rockport, Texas, because someone had to. A decade later, that same impulse has grown into a full volunteer-run sanctuary saving nearly 900 birds a year.

The whole operation runs on community devotion and, apparently, Gerald: a resident goose who patrols the grounds with the energy of someone who has never once doubted his authority. He doesn't get paid. He doesn't need to.

There's a shift happening across Georgia, and it's a good one. People are slowing down their birding, looking closer, and realizing they aren't just watching random birds pass through. They're recognizing regulars.

The red-headed woodpecker who has claimed a specific oak in Decatur. The Carolina wren who has decided, firmly and without asking, that your back deck belongs to her. Once you start seeing them as characters rather than species, the whole neighborhood becomes more alive.

The spaces we build rarely end up being just ours. We plant the garden, set up the porch, and somewhere along the way a wren moves into the hanging basket and a goose appoints himself director of operations.

Maybe that's the point. Leave the water out, keep a little corner untidy, and see who shows up to give the place its actual character.
