Engineered Mud Islands Yield a Rare Nesting Success in the Netherlands

Engineers in the Netherlands addressed a choked, lifeless freshwater lake by dredging thirty million cubic meters of silt from the lakebed to shape five low-lying islands. The artificial shallows and muddy banks restored missing wetland habitat, attracting tens of thousands of migratory birds to feed and rest.

By the summer of 2020, researchers discovered a nesting pair and a hatched chick of the rare gull-billed tern, a species virtually absent from Dutch breeding records for over six decades.

An Exhausted Barn Owl Finds Refuge Aboard a Racing Yacht

A terrestrial barn owl found itself stranded far outside its normal range, struggling against open water seventy miles off the Norfolk coast. After several failed attempts to land, the exhausted bird collapsed on the deck of a boat crewed by British Army soldiers competing in an offshore race.

The crew secured the owl in a box, keeping it warm and hydrated until an independent lifeboat team met them at sea to transport the bird safely to a mainland rehabilitation center.

Be gentle with yourself. The exhausted owl was met with a warm box, not a lecture about flying further next time. Rest isn't something you earn after everything else gets done, it's the thing that makes everything else possible.

Let other people help you get where you need to go. Sometimes the bravest thing you can do is admit you need somewhere safe to land and actually let yourself take it.
