Every so often, nature throws the script out entirely. I always pictured migration as tidy lines on a map, clean arrows pointing somewhere warm. Lately the stories I keep finding suggest nature is just winging it.

Finding a Midwest Bird Watching Paradise

There is a tropical seabird called a brown booby that should, by every reasonable measure, be cruising over open ocean somewhere warm and turquoise. Instead it took a spectacularly wrong turn and ended up at a random pond in Kansas City.

I can't stop picturing it: a crowd of baffled locals standing on the grass, watching an ocean bird casually dive-bomb for fish in the middle of Missouri.

Then come the stories that sound haunted until the explanation turns out to have feathers. The Devil Bird spooked villagers for centuries; its blood-curdling, almost human scream read as a sign that something terrible was on its way.

The monster behind the myth turned out to be a very large owl. The spot-bellied eagle owl, to be precise, complete with absurdly dramatic ear tufts and a real flair for vocal theatrics.
