The Tiny Jurassic Fossil Rewriting Flight Mechanics

A fossil unearthed in China, roughly 150 million years old and barely heavier than a handful of pebbles, is rewriting what we thought we knew about the origins of flight.

Birds didn't get airborne through some dramatic evolutionary leap. Instead, tail vertebrae were gradually trimmed down, shifting the center of balance forward, all of it happening long before modern tail feathers were even part of the picture. Small changes, enormous consequences.
