The Front Door Hostage Situation

A pair of mourning doves picked the worst possible real estate for their famously flimsy nest: a wreath, on a front door, in active daily use.

One Florida couple took the hint and quietly handed over their entryway. Walkway blocked, pets rerouted, deliveries paused for a full month, all so two birds with questionable architectural instincts could raise a family in peace.

After years of dogged advocacy, a stretch of coastline called the Hollandse Kust has officially become a protected marine area.

Seabirds get a safe place to feed and rest, and in exchange, things like commercial bottom trawling are now off limits. Turns out birds negotiate hard, even when they don't show up to the meetings.
