reflections
There is a distinct, heavy quiet that takes over a garden when winter finally settles in. Yet, right when most birds choose to pack up or go silent, the European Robin does the exact opposite.
I love the image of this tiny, fiercely bold bird claiming a frosty patch of earth as his absolute kingdom. He is famous for following gardeners around like a shadow, waiting with bright, intense eyes for a spade to overturn a fresh bit of soil. If you listen closely on a chilly afternoon, you can hear his song cutting through the cold air like a series of clear, hurried ripples.
He is proof that you don't need a massive footprint to completely command a space.
