The Common Kingfisher sits at the top of my lifetime list. An ocean still stands between us; someday I will cross it to Europe or Asia, but for now I watch him from my desk instead.
I picture him tucked against the riverbank reeds, invisible, and then suddenly his electric-blue back catches the afternoon sun and gives him away. He is barely the size of a sparrow, but his magnificent colors make him bigger than life. I imagine him still on a mossy branch, taking a breath to gather himself, before he drops headfirst after a minnow.
It took hours at the desk to translate those field marks into a sketch for the new collection. Worth it, though; catching all that color on paper makes the ocean feel a little narrower.
